Info for Caregivers: "Project Lifesaver" Help for Wandering Wandering is one of the scariest behaviors a family caregiver can experience. More than half of persons with Alzheimer's or dementia, regardless of the stage, will wander. When your loved one disappears, you become concerned about their safety - where are they, the need to take medications, hunger, thirst, etc. There are several ideas to manage the concern: putting alarms or bells on your doors and windows, getting a touch pad for the floor next to the bed, have an identification bracelet with home information, or purchase a GPS tracking bracelet. This last option may be expensive but a recent article in the Sacramento Bee highlighted the service called "Project Lifesaver". This is a nationwide system purchased by local law enforcement to provide an electronic bracelet to track at-risk people when they wander away. While availability may be limited, this service is usually free to residents of the individual jurisdiction. The system cuts the time it takes to find wanderers to an average of just 30 minutes after the absence is reported.
