Info for Caregivers: Mother's Day
The days we honor our parents are right around the corner - Mother's Day is May 12 and Father's Day, June 17. For most families, Mother's Day is a trip to the Hallmark store, the florist, and Sunday brunch. But it's different for families dealing with Alzheimer's. How you honor your parent with Alzheimer's will depend on the stage of the journey you are travelling. For most stages, however, a one-on-one conversation is a great way to engage your loved one and honor them as you listen and focus on them. To help initiate the conversation, here's some starter questions to help honor the woman that holds our heart forever. But watch out - you may be surprised by the answers:
- Tell me about the day CHILD'S NAME was born.
Note: by adding the child's name, you make it easier for your loved one to respond.
- What did you and Dad do on your first date?
- What is your favorite Mom saying?
- What was your favorite subject in school?
- Tell me the story behind each of your kids' names.
- Who is your favorite singer? Movie?
- What is your favorite family tradition?
- What color was your bicycle? Was it fast?
Remember, don't ask questions that start with "do you remember..." instead phrase it as "tell me about...". For example, "Do you remember our camping trip to Antelope Lake?" becomes "Tell me about your favorite camping trip."
When you shop online for Mom, remember you can support the Alzheimer's Aid Society by shopping at AmazonSmile. They will donate 0.5% of your purchase to the Society.
