UC Davis Lecture Series - "The Secrets of a Long Life"
Once again, the Alzheimer's Aid Society is proud to sponsor the UC Davis, Alzheimer's Disease Center Community Discovery Lecture Series.  The June Lecture will be "The Secrets of a Long Life" by Dr. David Johnson on Thursday, June 14, 2018 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at the UC Davis MIND Institute Auditorium 2825 50th Street Sacramento, CA 95817.   Although the event is free, you must pre-register or call 916-734-5728.

Dr. Johnson is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Alzheimer's Disease Center at the University of California Davis.  He has expertise in clinical and neuropsychological assessment of healthy brain aging and dementia.  His research identifies factors critical to healthy lifestyles that support long life and reduce dementia risk.  Dr. Johnson's presentation will provide strong evidence that suggests diet and exercise protect against cognitive decline and dementia.

You can explore future lectures at www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/alzheimers/lectures_events.html

Del Oro: Cruise Around the World
The Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center would like to invite you to their 2018 "Cruise Around the World" fundraiser on June 20, 2018.  This annual event features a cook-off by local chefs, a silent auction, and raffles.  In addition, our very own Max Perry's band, Senillica, including Steve Sarine from Golden Pond, will provide live entertainment with music from the 50's, 60's and 70's.   You can purchase tickets online at Eventbrite, or mail in the registration form, or call  Del Oro's office at 916-728-9333.   We will see you there!

Caregiver Info:  The Heat is On!
It's summertime in Sacramento and the heat is ON!!  We have already had days with temperatures over 100 degrees.  Excessive heat can be very dangerous for your loved ones with Alzheimer's.   Because older bodies are less sensitive to changes in temperature and can't adjust as well, seniors might not even notice that they're overheating.  In addition, chronic health conditions and common medications, like beta blockers for high blood pressure, may impair the body's ability to respond to heat.  Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke in this handout from the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Tips for keeping cool:
  • Dehydration is a danger and can lead to urinary tract infection.  Encourage your loved one to drink more fluids than usual, but avoid caffeine in tea, sodas, and coffee and alcoholic beverages.
  • Eat cooling snacks like homemade popsicles (with a cupcake liner as drip catcher) or slightly frozen grapes.
  • Avoid the outdoors during the hottest times of day (from 11 am to 4 pm).  Drive as close as possible to the doors of buildings you are travelling to in order to avoid long walks in the heat.  If you do go outside, find a cool, shady spot to rest in.
  • Make sure you and your loved one are dressed in lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes. Try to stick to natural fibers like cotton. Use hats and umbrellas outside.
  • Use air conditioning, or frequent air conditioned public spaces like malls, movie theaters, or libraries, if your home does not have it.
  • Stick to light meals, like salads, and don't use the oven or stove if possible.
  • Develop a relationship with a family member or friend to check in every day.  If you lack transportation, ask someone to drive you so you are not walking in the heat to appointments, for groceries, etc.
  • Monitor your loved one: remember that they may not be able to tell when they are becoming over-heated, or may not be able to express their discomfort.
  • Place a cool washcloth on the back of the neck and a pan of cool water close by to periodically re-cool the towel.
  • Keep bedding light and clean, particularly if a person is bedridden.  A bed frame can also help circulate air underneath the bed.
