UC Davis Lecture Series - "The Aging Mind: A Look Under the Hood"
The October and final lecture will be "The Aging Mind: A Look Under the Hood" by Denise Park, Ph.D., University of Texas.  Her talk will focus on aspects of brain and behavior that suggest a healthy and normally-functioning individual may be in the earliest stages of Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Park is the Distinguished University Chair in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, and a University of Texas Regents' Research Scholar, as well as Director of Research at the Center.  Her primary research interest is focused on the study of the aging mind. She directs the Dallas lifespan brain study which is a large longitudinal study that assesses changes in the aging brain and relates these changes to brain activity and cognitive function. She is particularly interested in isolating a neural footprint during middle age that predicts who will age well cognitively and who will not, and has done extensive work on the role of amyloid deposition in healthy adults.

The event will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2018 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at the UC Davis MIND Institute Auditorium, 2825 50th Street, Sacramento, CA 95817.  Although the event is free, you must pre-register at Eventbrite or call (916) 734-5728.

This lecture series is offered by the UC Davis Alzheimer's Disease Center for the Sacramento Metropolitan Area and communities throughout Northern California. The theme of this year's series is healthy brain aging and prevention.  Check out the Alzheimer's Disease Center website to see videos of past lectures

"Anticipating the Transition to a Care Setting" Workshop
As a caregiver, anticipating having to move your loved one to a care setting can be a difficult time. Carol Kinsel, GCM, and Stefani R. Wilson, MS, MFT, invite you to join the conversation where they will explore what can feel like an emotional roller coaster ride for the primary caregiver. Topics include - factors leading up to a move, important things to keep in mind during your search, and strategies for promoting a smooth transition before and after "the move."

The date is Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:30 pm.  This free workshop is co-sponsored by Senior Care Solutions and Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center.  Space is limited.  Call 916-965-5565 to register or see the flyer for more information.  The location information will be provided upon registration.

Joey Lopes Memorial Main Event
Are you hungry??  It is time again for the Joey Lopes Memorial Main Event.

Joey Lopes was a hometown West Sacramento boxer who fought in the late 1940s and throughout the 1950s. At many times he competed at the Memorial Auditorium across the river. In his early career he was selected for the 1948 U.S. Olympics boxing team. He went on to fight three times for the World Lightweight crown. He fought professionally 92 times, with 62 wins, 24 losses, and six draws. Joey died in 1997 from complications from Alzheimer's disease.  Remembered as a fearless fighter and a West Sacramento community leader, Joey was honored in 2016 with a community park in West Sacramento.  His sister, Jackie Lopes Gilmete said "Joey's last fight was by far his greatest.  He wasn't able to beat Alzheimer's disease, but just like he did every time he stepped into the ring, he fought his heart out."

His family annually sponsors a benefit dinner to honor Joey and to assist the Alzheimer's Aid Society and the American River College Gerontology Scholarship Fund.
